About Me

Me hiking the Adirondack High Peaks

Hi, I’m Chris.  A few years ago I realized that I would be turning 40 soon and I knew that my physical fitness was certainly not where I wanted it to be.  I also came to the conclusion that if I didn’t do something differently now, it would only be more difficult to change my habits and stay in shape as I got older.

I have been an avid cyclist and amateur bicycle racer since I was a kid, but getting older I wanted to find ways to be even healthier.  When I was 36, my wife and I began eating whole-grain and organic foods almost exclusively and significantly reduced or eliminated our intake of processed foods like high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.  It was a big jump, and we have both enjoyed the complete lifestyle benefits including losing some weight and generally feeling better every day.

This year we had our first child, an incredible baby girl.  This life-changing event has made me once again reconsider my level of health and fitness (and the development of our daughter’s health and diet habits) and persuaded me to give Paleo a shot.  For us, it wasn’t a great stretch but I will admit that I haven’t completely eliminated grains and dairy at this point (truthfully, I lean towards Primal criteria).  I don’t consistently go to the gym, but I do still love to ride and I believe that combining Paleo or Primal nutrition with my cycling and semi-regular workouts will allow me to enjoy a longer and healthier life with my wife and daughter.  So far, I have seen slight weight loss.  I’ve been eating healthy to begin with, so maybe it is too early to see any other specific benefits, but I am positive they will appear.

I should also mention that I am a foodie and I really enjoy eating.   Not only am I particular about what I put into my body, I am extremely particular about how it all tastes.  Life is too short to eat things that don’t help you live a better life and that don’t satisfy your palette and your soul!

    Hi Chris!

I found your post talking about the lack of Paleo apps a few days ago. I recently launched a Paleo-centric iPhone app at slimkicker.com a month ago, and wonder if you think it’d be an useful service?

The site and iPhone app basically turns healthy eating/fitness into a level-up RPG game – you get points for tracking healthy food, activities and participating in challenges such as not drinking soda for a week. You can upload a picture of something you’ll reward yourself everytime you reach certain milestones, and “level up”. Something to act as motivation.. and it’s free. As I mentioned, it’s Paleo centric – we have challenges such as 30 days of whole foods, and no grains.

If you think this app could help your readers, could you could briefly mention in your next post? I’d really appreciate it :)

    Best!
    Christine
